Windows XP Repair Virus Removal Guide

Virus Type: Rogue Security Application
Threat Level: 8 / 10

Windows XP Repair is a fake disk optimization application. The application is designed for Windows XP but there are also versions for other operating systems of Windows. For example, Windows Vista Repair is for Windows Vista and Windows 7 Repair is for Windows 7. These three replace Windows XP Restore, Windows Vista Restore, and Windows 7 Restore. The main change between the new and old applications is the change in the name of the application. The symptoms created by the applications are the same and they are all fake disk optimization applications. This application should be removed and will harm the computer since it does make changes to different settings in Windows.

A disk optimization program is designed to optimize the computer hard drive. By optimizing the disk, the computer may operate faster and provide a strong benefit for the user. However, a fake disk optimization program will create pop ups about issues that don’t exist in hopes that the user will purchase the program. Windows XP Repair will also hide files on the computer in order to scare the user into purchasing the program; however, it is important to note that the files are hidden but still there on the computer. The comments posted by users who were infected by Windows Restore, the comments posted by users who were infected by Windows Recovery, and the comments posted by users who were infected by Windows XP Recovery may provide insight into the successful removal of Windows XP Repair since they are all from the same family of viruses. The comments will also help with getting the files on the computer viewable.

This virus should be rated a 10 if you restart your computer it wipes out all of your programs and documents. I have had to rebuild 2 machines in less than 24 hours because of Windows XP Repair virus.

Your files aren’t wiped, they’re just hidden. Open a command prompt and at the C:\ prompt type “attrib -h /s /d” to bring them back.
