Guide to Unregister a DLL Windows XP / Vista

When fixing a problem, you may have to unregister a dll file. Sometimes you may have to register a dll file, so you will go through that also. DLL holds data which is used by programs.

Warning: Unregistering or registering a DLL is highly not recommended unless you are sure of what you are doing since you can damage your computer. Please exercise caution

Below are the steps

1. Start by clicking on start from the bottom left hand side of your computer screen

2. Click on Run. You will see it from what pops up when you click Start

3. When the run box comes up, type in cmd

4. The command prompt will come up. It is highly recommended that you take any steps possible to backup the dll before unregistering it

You must start by moving the command prompt to the folder in which the dll is. You do this by using command prompt command, which you can find here

For example, if the dll is in the windows/system32 folder, you would type cd windows\system32.

To go back to the base folder, type cd \

5. Once you are in the correct folder, you can unregister the dll by typing regsvr32 /u nameoffile.dll and replace nameoffile with the file name which needs to be unregstered. To register a file, type regsvr32 nameoffile.dll
