Antivirus Monitor (AntivirusMonitor) Virus Removal Guide

Virus Type: Rogue Security Application
Threat Level: 8 / 10

Antivirus Monitor, which is also known as AntivirusMonitor, is a fake antivirus program. Antivirus programs are used to block and remove computer viruses; however, since Antivirus Monitor is fake, the program will not remove or block any computer viruses. Antivirus Monitor was released around March 5; however, this type of virus is not new. Fake antivirus programs, also known as rogue security applications, have been released over the web for many years. Some define these programs to be called scamware because they attempt to trick the user into purchasing the fake program. Similar to most fake antivirus programs, Antivirus Monitor is generally installed through the use of a trojan horse, which is generally downloaded while browsing the internet on specific websites. The trojan is generally downloaded through an exploited security flaw. The virus comes from a family of fake antivirus programs, which include Antispyware Soft and AV Security Suite. Antivirus Monitor has a slightly different look but has a similar interface to Antispyware Soft and AV Security Suite. The program is a copy of AntiMalware GO, AntiVira Av, and Antivirus .NET. The main similar feature that these fake programs have is that they block a majority of executable files, making it hard to remove the virus. Antivirus Monitor will block all applications unless the file name of the executable of the application is iexplore.exe or firefox.exe since Antivirus Monitor doesn’t block Internet Explorer or Firefox. Antivirus Monitor needs Internet Explorer and Firefox so that they can redirect the user to their website.

Once installed, Antivirus Monitor will set itself to startup automatically so that it can start up when the computer turns on. Antivirus Monitor will also generally modify Internet Explorer settings to force the browser to go through a proxy server. This will make the browser only able to go to the website of the virus. By changing the settings back, the user may be able to visit the web. In order to fix the issue, go to your internet explorer browser and click on Tools, Internet Options, Connections tab, and LAN settings. Next, uncheck the box by “Use a proxy server for your LAN (These settings will not apply to dail-up or VPN connections).”

Below is our recommended removal tool for Antivirus Monitor. The removal tool has been rated 5 cows out of 5 by Tucows and was previously CNET’s Editor’s Choice. Feel free to download it below.

If you are unable to run the removal tool, or are unable to run any programs in general, you may need to stop the processes associated with Antivirus Monitor with task manager. If task manager has been blocked by Antivirus Monitor, try using Process Explorer. If Antivirus Monitor blocks Process Explorer, rename Process Explorer to iexplore.exe or firefox.exe. Antivirus Monitor will generally not block the com version of Process Explorer, which can be downloaded here.

Another method to open task manager is to restart the computer and attempt to open task manager before Antivirus Monitor loads so that Antivirus Monitor can’t block task manager. Antivirus Monitor will generally displays the following warning when opening an application (however, it will not display the message if the filename is explorer.exe) -

“Security Warning
Application cannot be executed. The file [filename].exe is infected. Do you want to activate your antivirus software?”

Other messages displayed by Antivirus Monitor include:

“Windows reports that computer is infected. Antivirus software helps to protect your computer against viruses and other security threats. Click here for the scan your computer. Your system might be at risk now.”

“Your computer is being attacked by an internet virus. It could be a password-stealing attack, a trojan – dropper or similar.”

It is recommended to use safe mode when removing the virus because Antivirus Monitor will generally not be able to load in safe mode. To enter safe mode, restart the computer and press F8 multiple times before the Windows screen to bring up the boot options.
