Windows Background Protector, also known as WindowsBackgroundProtector, is a new fake security application which was released in March 2023; this specific fake security application was released roughly one day after Windows Lowlevel Solution, a similar clone of the software, was released. Windows Background Protector claims to offer a variety of services including System Security, Privacy, System Utilities, System Information, Media Tools, and Internet Security. Like many new fake antivirus programs, Windows Background Protector displays in the right hand area of the program system information such as the name of processing unit in the computer and the user’s operating system. Also similar to most other fake security programs, Windows Background Protector will display warnings such as system slowdown, unprotected privacy data, and internet connection loss on the program itself to scare the user into purchasing the program. Windows Background Protector is generally installed without user permission through the use of a trojan horse, which is downloaded while browsing the internet. The user is generally shown a fake system alert; when the user pushes “OK” on the alert, it generally will then download Windows Background Protector onto the user’s computer. Windows Background Protector is unique from other fake antivirus programs in that it attempts to look legitimate by making itself look like the legitimate Microsoft Security Essentials program. In doing so, it hopes to trick the user into purchasing the fake program even through Microsoft Security Essentials is a free program. Windows Background Protector is a clone of previous fake antivirus programs; generally, most fake antivirus programs are clones of each other. Clone are generally created to make it harder to be found by removal software. Windows Background Protector is similar in functionality to ThinkPoint and CleanThis.
